Grampians
Official Grampian National Park information
Our drive from Adelaide back to Melbourne was the inland route and there were many interesting places to stop and hang out a bit. The Grampians National Park is about 200 kilometers west of Melbourne and is a collection of sandstone mountains created some 380,000,000 years ago. At Mount Williams at certain times of the year, the winds are such that they create a standing wave allowing hang-glider pilots to reach 28,000 feet. Near San Diego where I did my hang-gliding I never able to get a thermal to take me higher than 3,000 feet and I was suitably impressed. In 2006 about half the park was burned and yet within months the eucalyptus were growing back.
