Hanging Rock
Another item on our itinerary from Adelaide to Melbourne was Hanging Rock, about an hour north-west of Melbourne. It was formed some 6,000,000 years ago by magma coming up a vent and solidifying into columns. According to Wikipedia, it has been used as a concert venue by Leonard Cohen, Rod Stewart, and Bruce Springsteen. The Rolling Stones had to postpone. It was originally used by the Wurundjeri peoples as an initiation site. A work of fiction, "Picnic at Hanging Rock", is a brooding story of the disappearance of a party of school girls in 1900. An equally brooding movie with repressed sexuality undertones was based on it. Having said all that, the rocks are a whole lot of fun to clamber about.
