Sovereign Hill

In 1851 gold was discovered near Ballarat, about 100 kilometers west of Melbourne. There was, of course, a gold rush. Sovereign Hill is an open air museum opened in 1970. It purportedly faithfully recreates the site, complete with 60 buildings, some of which, like the blacksmith and carriage maker, are functional whereas the brothel is not. There is a tour of a former mine wherein it is made quite clear that the working conditions were something from Hades.
