Eltham

The palace dates back to around 1300 or so and most of it is in ruins. The British Royals lived there for about 200 years. There followed a long series of utterly irresponsible owners who let the buildings and grounds completely deteriorate. In the 1930s the remaining interior portion was redecorated in "art deco" in a truly jarring contrast. In 1995 the English Heritage took the place over and began restoration. My wife is originally from Eltham in Australia which has since been absorbed as a suburb of Melbourne. The Australians pronounce it "el-tum" whereas the British pronounce it "el-thum". She lost no time in straightening them out.
