Wikipedia's Cutty Sark information
The first picture is of the "Cutty Sark", concerning which see the link above for a really fascinating account. Greenwich started off as Placentia Palace (a designation begging for word-play) where the royals, including Henry VIII, lived for about 200 years. The Royal Observatory was established there in 1675, its purpose being to establish accurate celestial tables for navigation for the emerging empire. In 1884 the Prime Meridian was adopted, a longitude of 0 passing through the site, prior to which time there was a bunch of them.
