Beer, Devon
Beer, a village on the coast of south-west Devon, gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon "bearu", which means grove. It is quite picturesque and site of the Beer Quarry, source of most of the limestone used in building England's palaces, cathedrals, and monasteries. The limestone's chemical composition is unique in that upon exposure to air it actually gets harder. Working in the quarry: 12 hour days, tallow candles making thick smoke, no ventilation, hard physical labor, rock dust, incessant high decibel noise, and low temperatures. Life was short.
