Berlin
In 1959 The Wall had not yet been built and it was possible to wander about in the eastern sector. One simply walked through the Brandenburger Tor. One of the main thoroughfares in the eastern sector is StalinAllee which was like a Potemkin village in that the spiffy looking buildings were facades behind which was rubble. Attempts at conversation got nowhere. People were exceedingly reluctant to talk. Two years later The Wall went up. It was stunning for me to see in newsreels tanks swivelling their turrets on streets that I had walked on. There is a whale of a lot to learn about Berlin. Try the above links.
