Lake Titicaca
Lake Titicaca is located at the southern end of Peru and is at an elevation of 12,500 feet. My first stop before heading out on the lake was at the ruins of a fertility temple. Picture #2 shows a Catholic church in the background. After it was built under the supervision of "our friends", the indigenous people under the cover of darkness put phallic symbols on each of the roof corners. Out on the lake, the Uros people live on floating islands made of reeds and they use boats made of reeds as well. Shortly before I was there, the people living on one of the large islands had a an internal dispute that couldn't be resolved, so they cut the island in two and hauled one of the halves further away. I also visited Taquile island which has a population of about 2000. Most of its surface has been terraced for agriculture. It is customary for the women there to speak in a whisper.
