Saqsaywaman
This used to be a fort overlooking Cuzco. Over the centuries the smaller stones were pillaged for construction elsewhere and left behind were the big ones too large to handle easily. The masonry is quite remarkable. These monstrous stones fit together almost seamlessly. A team of Japanese archaeologists using x-ray and radar determined that in the inside layers of the joints are layers of dirt to serve as cushions during an earthquake. They estimated that the current structures could withstand a 8.0 quake.
