Tomsk
We spent a couple of weeks in Tomsk, seeing the university (one of the top five in Russia), touring various sites, staying at a country dacha with friends, and hanging out in general. The city was still suffering terribly from the economic collapse of the Soviet Union. Tomsk had originally been one of the premier science centers, doing missile research and plutonium production, among other things. The last picture shows the cooling towers on the far horizon. When the cold war ended, so did the economic foundation of Tomsk. As a result, the city was packed with unemployed doctorates while routine maintenance was not getting done.
